How to replace Ignition Leads?

Ensure you follow all safety precautions when working on or under the vehicle. Make sure engine is totally cold and the vehicle is in gear/park, the handbrake is on, and the keys are out of the ignition. Refer to the manufacturer’s workshop manual if available.

Before you start we recommend using a digital camera to record how the existing leads attach to the ignition coil - distributor - coil pack, and the path they take to each plug. Take note of the route of each ignition lead and how they are arranged in the plastic retaining clips if fitted.

The Ignition leads are arranged in a certain way for a reason: to prevent cross-firing and interference with other engine parts, so be sure to put them back in the same order and manner. Keep ignition leads away from all metal parts to reduce risk of electrical discharge.

Replace one lead at a time. Many leads are numbered, so ensure correct interchange. Remove one old wire at a time and match it to the replacement lead of the same length. Route the new ignition lead and push the boot onto the plug or coil -distributor until you feel it click. Repeat the procedure for each wire.

Ignition Lead & Boot pliers are designed to minimise damage to leads and boots while removing and replacing automotive ignition leads. This tool makes removal easier and saves damaged hands and knuckles and is most useful when access is restricted.

To use it, simply grasp the boot with the rounded jaws, rotate left and right, then pull straight out.


  • Do not pull too hard or over twist on ignition lead as this may cause internal damage or tearing of the lead
  • Not to be used when engine is running as High Tension Voltage leakage can CAUSE ELECTRIC SHOCK.
